Sunday, October 3rd!

As in prior years, the route will take runners throughout the Sellwood-Moreland neighborhood.  This will significantly impact transportation into, out of, and throughout the neighborhood, beginning the day before the race!  (“No parking” signs will go up Saturday, October 2, at 2:00 PM, and cars will be courtesy towed to nearby local streets starting then.)
SMILE’s Transportation Committee Chair met with a representative from the Marathon, who stated that organizers this year have attempted to improve the experience for neighborhood members based on feedback from past years. The information below, which is also available online here along with other information about the Marathon, addresses access issues for the neighborhood in general, as well as for nine specific areas within the neighborhood.  Please take the time now to review this information and begin planning ahead!  After reviewing the information below, if you have any questions, please direct them to Zack Duffly at Transporation-Chair@sellowood.org.
The map below shows the race route in and around our neighborhood. It will generally not be possible to drive on, or drive across, the streets used for the race until the last runner has passed the location and the traffic control devices have been removed. Vehicles will be turned away one block prior to reaching the race route.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD

Runners will enter Sellwood-Moreland via the Sellwood Bridge. They run north on SE 7th Ave to the bluff and then continue east on SE Sellwood Blvd. The route then turns north onto SE 13th Ave and continues east on SE Bybee Blvd. Upon reaching the Moreland Presbyterian Church runners turn right to run south down SE 19th Ave until SE Spokane St. They then run east on Spokane, north on SE 21st Ave, east on SE Lambert St, and finally north on SE 22nd Ave to connect back on to SE Bybee Blvd.
At the intersection of SE 22nd Ave and SE Bybee Blvd the race routes diverge. The half marathon continues north on SE 22nd Ave but the full marathon turns right onto SE Bybee Blvd and runs east to do a 5-mile loop around Eastmoreland and Reed College. Full marathon runners return from the Eastmoreland loop the same way they left, via SE Bybee Blvd. Upon returning to SE 22nd Ave and SE Bybee Blvd, they will turn right and join the half marathon course by continuing north on SE 22nd Ave.
The route continues north on SE 22nd Ave until turning left to run west on SE Reedway St to SE Milwaukie Ave. Runners then exit the neighborhood running north on SE Milwaukie Ave.

GENERAL TRAFFIC CONSIDERATIONS IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD

It will not be possible to use the Bybee Blvd overpass of 99E to cross back and forth between Sellwood-Moreland and Eastmoreland between the hours of 7:20 a.m. and 12:40 p.m.
It will not be possible to drive on or across SE 7th Ave, SE Sellwood Blvd, SE 13th Ave, SE Bybee Blvd, SE 19th Ave, SE Spokane St, SE 21st Ave, SE Lambert St, SE 22nd Ave, SE Reedway St, or SE Milwaukie Ave on the portions of those roads used by the race (please refer to the map) beginning at 7:20 a.m. and lasting as late as 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. depending on the location.
The expected timeline for the last runner to pass the following locations and have the streets opened to regular traffic is as follows:
  • SE 7th Ave & SE Sellwood Blvd: 11:00 a.m.
  • SE Bybee Blvd & SE 19th Ave: 11:15 a.m.
  • SE Bybee Blvd & SE 22nd Ave: 12:40 p.m.
  • SE Reedway St & SE Milwaukie Ave: 1:00 p.m.

ACCESS VIA SE 17TH AVE & REEDWAY ST

The ONLY place where it will be possible for vehicles to cross the race route will be at the intersection of SE 17th Ave & Reedway St. During all hours of the event, vehicles will be able to travel north/south on SE 17th Ave in order to enter/exit the boxed-in area. Note that although vehicle travel will be possible at this location, there will be heavy delays as law enforcement officers control the flow of traffic through the intersection. All motorists in this area are advised to plan for extra travel time.

SPECIFIC AREAS

The following sections outline special considerations for each portion of the Sellwood-Moreland neighborhood. Please take a moment to identify the portion of the neighborhood in which you live or work and note the traffic impacts.
Homes and businesses near SE Oaks Park Way (north of SE Tacoma St and west of SE 7th Ave): There will be law enforcement presence at the intersection of SE Tacoma St and SE 6th Ave that will assist vehicles across the runners’ route as gaps in runners permits. This will be the only way to enter/exit this area between the hours of 7:20 and 11:00 a.m.
Homes and businesses in the area east of SE 7th Ave but west of SE 19th Ave and south of Bybee: Between the hours of 7:20 and 11:15 a.m. the only way to enter and exit your neighborhood will be to use SE Tacoma St and 99E (SE McLoughlin Blvd), which will not have any restrictions during the entire event. It will not be possible to travel north/south across SE Bybee Blvd before 11:15 a.m.
Homes and businesses East of 19th but west of 22nd, and south of Bybee but north of Lambert: For the majority of the race there will only be one way to enter and exit your area. Between the hours of 7:20 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. you may use SE 20th or SE 21st Ave to access the intersection of Reedway and SE 17th Ave, where law enforcement will be present to allow vehicles to cross the runners’ route on Reedway when there is a sufficient gap in runners. Note that there will be significant delays at this intersection, as it is the only place where north/south traffic will be able to cross the race route.
After 11:15 a.m. the last runners will be off of SE 19th Ave and Tacoma St, and it will then be possible to travel on/across those roads to reach 99E.
ALTERNATIVELY it may be more convenient to park your vehicle somewhere west of SE 19th Ave before the race begins in order to have easy access out of and back into your neighborhood.
Homes and businesses East of 19th but west of 21st, and south of Lambert but north of Spokane: Residents needing access into or out of this area between the hours of 7:20 and 11:15 a.m. should plan to park their vehicles on a nearby street west of 19th Ave, as it will not be possible for a vehicle to enter or exit during that window of time.
Homes and businesses north of Bybee but south of Reedway, and west of SE 22nd Ave: For the majority of the race there will only be one way to enter and exit your area. Between the hours of 7:20 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. you may use the intersection of Reedway and SE 17th Ave, where law enforcement will be present to allow vehicles to cross the runners’ route on Reedway when there is a sufficient gap in runners. Note that there will be significant delays at this intersection, as it is the only place where north/south traffic will be able to cross the race route.
After 11:15 a.m. the last runners will be off of Bybee west of 22nd Ave, and it will then be possible to travel across Bybee to reach 99E.
ALTERNATIVELY it may be more convenient to park your vehicle somewhere outside of the boxed-in area (north of Harold or south of Bybee) before the race begins in order to have easy access out of and back into your neighborhood.
Homes and businesses north of Bybee and east of SE 22nd Ave: Between the hours of 7:20 a.m. and 12:40 p.m. it will not be possible to travel across SE 22nd Ave between Bybee and SE Reedway St; nor will it be possible to travel across Bybee anywhere east of SE 22nd Ave. Those needing access into and out of this area during the impacted timeframe should use SE 23rd Ave to access 99E on SE Tolman St.
Homes and businesses north of SE Reedway St: Between the hours of 7:20 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. it will not be possible to travel on or across Milwaukie between SE Reedway St and SE Franklin St. During this same time it will not be possible to travel on or across SE Reedway St between SE 22nd Ave and Milwaukie. Those needing access into and out of this area during the impacted timeframe should use SE 17/18th Ave to access 99E.
Homes within the box of Reedway/Harold and 20th/Milwaukie: Between the hours of 7:20 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. it will not be possible to travel on Milwaukie, 20th, Reedway, or Harold anywhere within this box. The only way into/out of this box will be via SE 17th Ave. Residents in this area are strongly encouraged to park their vehicles north of Harold St in order to have easy access into/out of their neighborhood.
Sellwood Bridge: From 7:10 to 10:45 a.m. vehicles approaching the Sellwood Bridge from the north (driving south on Macadam) will not be able to access the bridge to head eastbound over the bridge. Vehicles approaching the Sellwood Bridge from the south (driving north on Macadam) will be able to access the bridge to head eastbound over the bridge. No vehicles will be allowed to travel westbound across the Sellwood Bridge from Sellwood into South Portland from 7:10 to 10:45 a.m.

“NO PARKING” STREETS & DRIVEWAY ACCESS ALONG ROUTE

All streets that are used for the actual race will be posted “No Parking” from 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 2nd, to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 3rd. If your home or business is located on the actual race route, please note that any vehicles parked on the street during the indicated hours will be courtesy towed. Towed vehicles will be taken to the closest possible street that is not posted as No Parking.
“No Parking” enforcement will also be in effect in instances where one-way streets run into the street used for the actual race. If your home or business is located on a one-way street that intersects the race route, you will not be able to park your vehicle within one block of the race route from 2:00 p.m. on Saturday to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. If your car is towed, please call 503-823-0044.
Because it will not be permissible to drive on the streets used for the race while runners are present, residents and businesses whose driveways access the race route will not be able to pull their vehicles into/out of their driveways during the closures; they should instead plan to park their vehicles on a nearby street that is not located on the race route. In your neighborhood, the streets that will be used for the race and will therefore be posted “No Parking” and inaccessible to resident and business driveways are:
  • SE 7th Ave between SE Tacoma St and SE Sellwood Blvd
  • SE Sellwood Blvd between SE 7th Ave and SE 13th Ave
  • SE 13th Ave between SE Sellwood Blvd and SE Bybee Blvd
  • SE Bybee Blvd between SE 13th Ave and SE 19th Ave, as well as anywhere east of SE 22nd Ave
  • SE 19th Ave between SE Bybee Blvd and SE Nehalem St
  • SE Spokane St between SE 19th Ave and SE 21st Ave
  • SE 21st Ave between SE Nehalem St and SE Lambert St
  • SE Lambert St between SE 21st Ave and SE 22nd Ave
  • SE 22nd Ave between SE Lambert St and SE Reedway St
  • SE Reedway St between SE 22nd Ave and Milwaukie
  • SE Milwaukie Ave between SE Reedway St and SE Franklin St
  • SE 20th Ave between SE Reedway St and SE Harold St
  • SE Harold St between SE 20th Ave and SE Milwaukie Ave
Vehicles approaching these streets will be stopped and turned around one block prior to reaching the street until the course has been cleared of runners and re-opened.
