Springwater Corridor

Dear Neighbors,

As you may know, Metro’s Natural Areas Program has negotiated an agreement with the Oregon Pacific Railroad to extend the Springwater Corridor Trail along the west and south sides of the existing track from SE Umatilla Street to SE 13th Avenue.

A representative of Metro will be attending our neighborhood association (SMILE) meeting on Wednesday, January 5, 2011, to talk about improvements which are being made to the public right of way and the Oregon Pacific Railroad tracks at street crossings in the neighborhood. The meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. at the SMILE Station at 8210 SE 13th Avenue

This will be the first step in the implementation of the Trail project.  Metro and OPRR will be replacing the rails in the asphalt street with concrete panels to provide much safer crossings for pedestrians, cyclists and the railroad at Marion St., Linn St., 11th Ave., and 13th Ave. The work is slated to begin in January, and will be spaced throughout a six to nine month period. This work should take 3-4 days at each intersection. Detours will be set up to maintain access to the residential communities west of the tracks and these neighbors will be notified prior to the beginning of work.

SMILE will be working with Metro and the City of Portland on the design and construction of the Trail and we will do our best to keep you, as neighbors and members of SMILE, informed of steps along the way.  We would very much value your suggestions on how to make this a project which will benefit our neighborhood and, consistent with our role as a voluntary citizens’ association, will try to help you with any concerns you might have.

I have received a liquor license application for a Restaurant in the SELLWOOD-MORELAND neighborhood area and would like to know if you are aware of any concerns. MORELAND HOUSE, located at 6716 SE MILWAUKIE, has applied under new ownership for a Full On-Premises sales license (which allows the sale of liquor, malt beverages, wine and cider for consumption on the premises). The contact for this application is Nicholas Jeffress – 971-998-3834.

Following is the information captured on the business information form:

Seating capacity – 103; outside seating capacity 10 – outdoor seating hours: 8:00am – 11:00pm

Excellent article about our fine neighborhood in Neighborhood Notes:

Sellwood Rediscovered: Reinvented Southeast 13th Avenue Emerging as Destination

The following Board Resolution was passed by SMILE in light of the fact that currently the Sellwood Bridge project has $130 million of work being planned on the west side and $0 being planned on the east side.  So far no commitment of resources for safety has been made by either the county or the city despite SE Tacoma Street’s demonstrated failure of current transportation infrastructure to protect pedestrians from being struck by vehicles.  This Board Resolution will be delivered to Policy Stakeholder Committee members of the bridge project tonight, Monday, October 25 at 5:30 pm, when they meet to hear the Community Advisory Committee’s recommendation of bridge design type.  This meeting will be held in the first floor conference room of David Evans and Associates at 2100 SW River Parkway.
